I think it all has to do with the period when the books were printed. I personally associate the library scent with hardcovers between 1930 and 1980, and paperbacks (especially Penguin Classics) between 1970 and 2000. I don't think there's anything you can do beyond buying a lot of books of whatever period you associate with the library smell. Newer books may change their odor as they age, but I couldn't tell you how those will smell in the future. The gloss paper that is prevalent as of late has a very different scent than what I ordinarily associate with the library
