just finished The Sparrow. Overall I'd say I enjoyed it, maybe give it a 7/10. I genuinely enjoy religious lit and this book was very much more on the side of religious lit than it was sci-fi. all good themes: loss of faith, unknowability of God, road to Hell is paved with good intentions, etc etc. but man the supporting characters were borderline insufferable. Emilio, the main character, a Jesuit priest, was fine, but all the side characters he is with and their interactions felt completely fake. dinner table scenes where they are talking, when they are cooking, whatever you name it, it took me way out of the book. And the author's humor is not great. Now with all that said I am going to read Children of God, the sequel. Has anyone read it? Thoughts?
