Well, /lit/, it's here. Have any of you picked it up? If so, what do you think so far? I'm on page 95 at the moment, and so far it has been amazing, my favorite chapters probably being DFW's introduction as the author and the one about the little fat kid who everyone hates.

This is my first attempt at reading a DFW novel, as I've always been more interested in his non-fiction and turned away by the majority of his short stories, but the ideas that he said in letters/interviews that he was trying to create in Pale King caught my interest very quickly, and even though it's essentially an unfinished manuscript I find it, so far, to be a fascinating piece of work. I will most likely try Infinite Jest once I am done with this.

tl;dr The Pale King has released, and I like it so far. What are your thoughts?

heh, reading it right now. there's definitely something fetishistic in the way he depicts all the young 20-year-old girls as vixens sleeping with all the older men around them while posted at menial, mindless jobs.

Still reading the Awl's essay here -- but while him talking about alcoholism makes more sense, I had theorized that he might have just been addicted to pot. based on the infinite jest chapters about marijuana-addicted characters, DFW's own reluctance to discuss the subject, and an IJ chapter where an intellectual character is laughed at for coming to Ennet House with a pot addiction.

btw PALE KING BITCHEZ???

I'm still trying to decide if I have to be that guy that's out pre-ordering it and starting it the day it comes out.

So from what you guys have read thus far, what do you think this thing's gonna look like?

For those of you who haven't: The website the Howling Fantods has links to a couple bits that have been published, and rumor has it that 'Incarnations of Burned Children' from Oblivion may also be part of it.

I, for one, am excited as hell. I like what he did in Oblivion; that is, taking on the complexity of the mind's reaction to the most boring of shit.

inb4 the weird brand of hate /lit/ seems to reserve for DFW.

Well I guess we'll have to see. Although I'm fairly certain that if you're still lurking around here by then you'll be harping on it without having read it.

There's something frightening about it, isn't there? The greatest writer of the twentieth century comes and goes: and we're left with an example. Someone rose above it- either possessed of superior abilities or not- and tried to make sense of it all.

Me either. It's going to be good. I can feel it.

An author should be considerate enough of her own estate to make sure it falls into the hands of beneficiaries she feels will enact her wishes. If they aren't trustworthy or the work is too good to pass up publishing, posthumous has to happen.

Juneteenth or The Trial. Hopefully, it will be more the latter and will stand up to Infinite Jest.
