For /lit/ reasons, if you already speak English natively, the only modern language worth learning is French. It's the only foreign language that offers a well-rounded corpus of literature that is equally competent with English. Germans do just philosophy, Italians do just Dante, Spaniards do just Cervantes, and Russians do just Dostoevsky and Tolstoy. Only Anglo-Saxons and Frenchmen do everything.

Ancient languages are another story and not really comparable.
