Probably Murakami's "After Dark".

Definitely not his best work, but I read it at a time when the only things I read were what was served up in school and shitty YA books. I'd heard about it through some blog, and then here on /lit/.

That summer I began to read through the rest of his work, and then (admittedly with /lit/ recs) read a lot more of a wide variety of great novels.

I guess I'd also include Raymond Carver's short stories as well, which I was introduced to at the same time.

Why is there so much hate to Murakami in this board?

Not that I'm a die-hard fan or anything, but it surprises me how it shows up in about any conversation.

So, what do you guys do on the birthday of an author you like?

Pic related, it's Murakami's birthday.

Just to be in the same vein as his protags, I think I'm going to hang around with precocious underage girls all day.

What's the best Murakami to buy for an 19 year old girl?

I've read KotS, Norwegian Wood, and just finished Underground.

In Underground he says
>I am nothing more than a simple, not very refined novelist. (This is not false modesty, as many will testify.)

lol'd thinking of /lit/ hate and also how Kenzaburo Oe really dug into him for being a pleb.

But he never held himself out to be a god-tier literary genius. I like him very much, from what I've read he's very engaging and sincere and I like the way he tells stories. In Underground he made the point that we all need stories to survive and we should try to see things from multiple perspectives rather than boil the world down to a single view that excludes all others, something which leads to violence and suffering. I like that a lot. A strong life affirming ethic runs throughout his work, which is far more than can be said for "literary geniuses" like Mishima even if his works are regarded technically better.

Murakami.

He ran a fucking jazz club, he's a marathon runner, and I love (almost) all of his works. I feel like he'd be really interesting to talk to. Especially about music (with his constant use of Jazz, Classical, and Rock etc. I totally respect the man's taste).

What is Haruki Murakami's best book, and why?

In a side note, this would be my first Murakami book. I've been told by a fellow /lit/erate that it's his best effort by far.

Thankyou.

My friends are suggesting that I read this author, however my friends consist of pretentious hipsters and quasi-autistic weaboos.

So give it to me straight, /lit/.

Is Haruki Murakami worth reading?

Or is he just another vapid pop-writer?

I liked Haruki Murakami's Kafka on the Shore. Are there any other fiction books like this, perhaps leaning more to the fantasy side? Or any fantasy book with philosophical subjects?

Not directly a books-related question, but I'm sure that there are some people on /lit/ can give me some advice because of a common background.
So, student here with a double major in Philosophy and History and basically no job experience whatsoever.
The academic year has ended and I'm having trouble finding a part-time job for the holidays (and maybe a few hours a week when Uni starts again), so I was thinking of just signing up for some volunteering instead so I can get some 'experience' and fill up my resume for a bit. After some research I found out that there are quite a few places that need volunteers (for example, a local politician needs an assistant for a few hours a week to prepare meetings, and some random foundations are recruiting secretaries/board members).
So my question would be, is it worth it to stop looking for a (lousily) paid job and improve my resume to support a possible future career? Will the skills that I build up with these jobs come in handy for the future?
Oh, and in case it matters, I just turned twenty, so I'm still quite young (yet, too expensive for a job at a supermarket).
