You don't sound pretentious, and most e/lit/ists will ignore people who use that term. You do sound a bit simplistic, though, but that's the kind of thing that fixes itself up as you write along and recheck your old ideas. Just make sure that your narrator is a well defined character and that it's useful to your message. If ypou haven't you should consider some of DFW's short stories. Good Old Neon is a must for this kind of narrator plays.
