The difficulty with secular socialism, at least conventionally with central planning and so on, is that it puts the entirety of economics into secular control which would totally exclude religious considerations. Therefore Christian socialism is entirely as realizable as secular socialism, yet totally incompatible with it.

According to Milbank, there are two rigorous definitions of God, that of Plontinus, which ended up becoming dominant in the late Middle Ages, and that of Proclus, which he thinks is actually where classical theologians like Augustine and Aquinas are coming from and allows for the greatest potential for social critique. He actually ties the discrepancy into different philosophical conceptions of property, one he says is required for capitalism and even for the secular world to have been possible.
