This isn’t true anymore. The vast majority of states require a Juris Doctor. Only 2 or 3 states don’t require a degree, and even these states impose restrictions.

First learn how the common law works, how our judicial system is set up etc. I think a pretty good book is Law 101 by Feinman. It’s a primer on these subjects and the legal profession.

Beyond this, I guess just pick out a few casebooks on various legal subjects and start reading. I have no idea why anyone would willingly subject themselves to this though. You might get a decent understanding of the historical development of American property law, contract law etc. But of what use is this?
