The value of creating fan-fiction is providing an enjoyable exercise for people to try their hand at writing. One might gain through this effort, accepting the pain of correction and submitting to the travails of understanding what works and why.

The problem we have is that fan-fiction is too broad in scope. Respectable works of fan-fiction are recognized as literature - rare though they may be.

'Inspired by' verses 'expanded on' is another point of contention. Is "Grendel" a work of fan-fiction?

Humor and satire abound as well, and some works may be grotesque, yet deliver a hearty laugh without pretending at high art.

We need some terminology to differentiate an experienced author who understands, and can gain financially from what they add to a franchise, to the earnest newcomer who makes a serious effort to deliver something worth reading with no expectation of standing next to the original.

And then something to cover the potential scribbles of inanity that we all see when tossing around the fan-fiction term.
