Let's assume the underlying predicate of Freud's Civilization and it's Discontents is correct. Let's assume that the social contract is simply one in which man trades some freedoms to fulfill his basest desires; to rape, to kill his enemy and so on, for what society can offer(collective utility, shelter, food, surplus).

In a post-modern society, devoid of meaning where surplus is so readily available but also we are more inhibited by the bounds of ideology than ever (Think political correctness, modern feminism and so on), what do you think the breaking point of this contract is? It is my understanding that the modern contract functions for the following reasons:

1: the abundance of circuses, including the one i am partaking in now. Many of these serve to sublimate "dangerous libidinal" (as freude described them) urges such as to kill or to fuck indiscriminately, as is made obvious by modern porn or video games.

2: The Augustian proliferation of "free speech" or the right to complain in order to curb any real organized discontent.

3. The oppressive functions of modern ideology and thought policing, whereby incorrect thoughts lead to modern social isolation, and

4. The increasingly competitive sexual marketplace and women's liberation that has functionally rendered the family unit no longer the building block of society, and led to a more disparate and functionally alone populace.


I guess what i'm saying is, how long do you think it can last? Imagining Bernays' method of mass control is functioning right now (it is), what do you think is the probable end point of this game?
