That's simple, because awareness is a presence that is always self-disclosing to itself and thinking/sensing is an extraneous layer added over this self-disclosing presence, and so when you subtract this extraneous layer there is still a presence remaining that has immediate access to itself in a way that is absent of subject-object distinction, knowing and being coincide in non-dual awareness.

[…] [T]he self is the very basis of any employment of means of knowledge and is therefore established prior to them. Therefore it cannot be refuted. We can only refute what we [externally] encounter, not what is our own being, for it is the very being of him who refutes it”
