I just started my own with a few really good friends. It's going well, so far. Advice for your own: Your circle has to be composed of dedicated people willing to consistently attend meetings; it doesn't work when you're missing a person or two each meeting. You'll also need an asshole in each circle, preferably a high-functioning guy or gal on the spectrum that never knows when to say what. At least you'll be able to count on someone who'll give uncensored feedback.

Lay down the rules on the very first meeting: when and where you're all meeting, what you'll focus on (prose or poetry, fiction or non-fiction, genres, etc.), and a goal.
The goal is pretty much the most important part of this, as it acts as a compass and as the concrete between your cinder blocks. Our circle's goal is to individually complete three short stories good enough to submit to a few magazines.

If you'd rather just join one: good luck, I say. The least that I can say is to never join a circle whose goal is to start a literary magazine or a blog. Those never amount to anything and is filled with quixotics.

I already know how to write. I'm just trying to hone my skills. Writing classes also provide me with people who are willing to give me feedback on my writing.

Why don't you tell us what your problem is with writing classes?

90% of my freelance work comes from Craigslist, funnily enough. The other 10% comes from clients who've read the fliers that I've scattered about in libraries and cafés throughout the bay area.

On Craigslist, you can either look for postings asking for services, or you can just advertise yourself. The latter is a much easier option. Be prepared to get lowballed, though. Also, price yourself according to your talents. Go on Craigslist and see how much other people are pricing themselves, first.

Judging from my personal experience, I would recommend you not depend on your degree to get you work. Clients usually just ask for references and proof of past work to see if they want to hire you or not.
