There is not really any connection, What being Liberal back then meant a completely different thing than what it means now(Americans especially are too retarded when it comes to the semantics of political theory so just avoid them).
I have never heard anyone with a brain claim that pre-Hegel philosophers are leftists though, Hegel I get because there was an uncertainty back then which caused a real split between right and young hegelians.
But in conclusion, no, he wasn't a leftist, you correctly assess why and I think assigning these labels is foolish in the first place(the pharaohs and Kings of antiquity adored money and gold but it's foolish to call them capitalists).
