It's very difficult to distill Lacan's take on the nature of desire without appealing to a long chain of signifiers/"Lacanese"

I highly recommend Fink's A Clinical Introduction to Lacanian Psychoanalysis. He's one of the foremost translators and practitioners in English of Lacan. His approach is the most systematic of all approaches I've read in regard to the paternal function, jouissance, etc. (Basically, all the pieces of Lacan's framework that he puts at the core of Psychosis, Neurosis, Perversion and the "fundamental fantasy" i.e. the subject's relation to the object/cause of desire.)

Sorry I can't be more helpful. Also, important to note that psychoanalysis is NOT psychology, psychiatry, etc. and most useful for a layperson as a toolbox of meta-level concepts to use as a lens (like other forms of critical theory.)
