Fear and Loathing in Los Vegas. It’s technically only written in 1971 but the whole thing is about the death of the counterculture and where to go from there.
> We are all wired into a survival trip now. No more of the speed that fueled that 60's. That was the fatal flaw in Tim Leary's trip. He crashed around America selling "consciousness expansion" without ever giving a thought to the grim meat-hook realities that were lying in wait for all the people who took him seriously... All those pathetically eager acid freaks who thought they could buy Peace and Understanding for three bucks a hit. But their loss and failure is ours too. What Leary took down with him was the central illusion of a whole life-style that he helped create... a generation of permanent cripples, failed seekers, who never understood the essential old-mystic fallacy of the Acid Culture: the desperate assumption that somebody... or at least some force - is tending the light at the end of the tunnel.

When I was 19-20 I borrowed this book from a friend and when I started reading I got to the part where Thompson is listing all the drugs he had with him, and they dude I borrowed it from had highlighted each drug and underlined them. It embarrassed me so much I gave the book back to him.
I never read anything by him since, should I?

Start with this one, reality can be a lot cooler than fiction Imo, then read Papillon by Henri Charrière. Start slow, take your time to understand what you read and if you dont, read the paragraph again,

What's an opening line that grabbed you by the balls anon?

>Fear And Loathing In Las Vegas
"We were at the edge of Barstow when the drugs began to take hold"

>Requiem For A Dream
"Harry locked his mother in the closet"

>Notes From The Underground
"I am a sick man... I am a spiteful man... I am an unpleasant man... I think my liver might be diseased"

Probably not the best, but I love the intro to Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. It sets the gonzo tone really well and hooks the reader fantastically. I quote it constantly. What is your favorite opening to a book /lit/?

I read this last night while tripping on acid. Would highly recommend. Laughed hysterically.

How much of this book actually took place? Am I missing the point, or is Thompson confessing to his friend's drugging and raping of an underage girl?

How do you remember all the things to debate, though?

For example, I've read Fear and Loathing twice and seen the movie a half dozen times but I still have no idea what the point of the entire story is about, no matter how many times I go through it

What the fuck even is this book?
I've read it twice now and seen the movie a half dozen times, both sober and on LSD

None of it makes any cohesive sense. There was no point to any of it. I don't understand how this became such a classic because it really just feels like each chapter is completely disconnected from the last
