What the Buddha taught is a good introduction. It includes a few sutras so you can get an idea about Buddhist writing.

Am interested in the history of Bhuddism and "eastern" Philosophy, and would like to attempt some primary texts as well as any other fiction or non-fiction my hands may or may not take hold of. Will this be enough to satisfy the hungry Gnosis constricting around me? Where also might those fangs plunge?

I've only read Rahula's "What the Buddha Thaught" as I saw it reccommended on several lists as a good intro text. While it had some good info and helped me get interested on the subject I feel like it was still a bit too technical in parts for someone without previous exposure to buddhism.

I started reading Gethin's "The Foundations of Buddhism", and from what I've read so far it seems to be pretty good and scholarly oriented, at least the first couple of chapters where he goes trough the history of the Buddha, the different buddhist schools and their texts. He lays down the information from what is gathered on texts and by tradition, with all the supernatural aspects (which Rahula seemed to conceal) as well as mentioning discrepancies between sources. Not gotten yet into the chapters where he explains the ideas of buddhism so I'll report on that later.

Also posting pic related cause I grabbed it from a thread in here and might be of use for someone.
