So I want a recommendation for a book, I really like the idea of reading something with fighting. Where a lot of thought and reflection contrast something so simple and brutal.

I guess I'm just looking for something that builds and is exciting where a person or people seem near invincible from outside but not so much from an internal look and we get to see how the character gets to that point or a story that starts that way and goes a different(hopefully not ridiculous) direction. Even just something kind of along that idea would be great.

Good fantasy is the best of what literature can be.

I'm still reading and loving the Black Company series by Glen Cook. I read the first three and loved the hell out of them. Just got done reading the Silver Spike and started on Shadow Games. Note: the Silver Spike should be read before Shadow Games, they take place at the same time, but in the Omnibus they publish Silver Spike later.

I remember there was another person on who was reading this as well and was at the same place I was. Any other Black Company fans? I love Croaker, One Eye and Goblin.

I'm sorry, but I don't see it as being self parody. They still remain a first hand look at what life amidst an elite mercenary would be like in a fantasy world.

Hello /lit/,

I am searching for a historical fiction book that had a female mercenary protagonist. I believe the book was set around the 10th-14th centuries. The title was a single word. Modern swear words are used throughout and the in-universe explanation is that the book is the recounting of history by a modern scholar who wanted to preserve the intentions rather than exact words of the characters. The main character was possibly raped as a child/teenager which is the reason she became a mercenary.

I only read an excerpt of the book but have gotten the strong urge to read the whole thing. Can anyone please help me find the title/author?

Just finished ASOIAF and I'm looking for some other low-magic fantasy books to take up my time with.

I've heard that Black Company and Malazan Book of the Fallen are good, but does /lit/ have any suggestions?

Hey /lit/ i need to ask something.

What are the most overused cliches in fantasy? Specifically in epic fantasy, what should a writer avoid? what would immediately make you drop a fantasy book?
