Its peak schizocore. I don't think its contrasts (and continuities) naturally stand on their own in the same way they would have in 1959; you'll enjoy it more if you have something to bring to the table in terms of context (e.g. historical/autobiographical) while reading it. (Although that's pretty much true of all literature--you get out what you can put in). Since you mentioned it, Naked Lunch is a lot less overtly pretentious than Eraserhead.

That's a very simple and self-important way to say you're filtered by the autobiographical aspect of the Beats and haven't made the connection to how they were inspired by experimental and subversive movements (e.g. Dadaism and jazz). You can make an argument that the book isn't successful but saying Burroughs didn't know what he was doing means you're filtered (i.e. Dada may be reduced to a relatively shallow take and jazz sometimes sounds like meaningless unstructured noise; but you have to do the work with regard to understanding the content in order to make those claims). The book is far from lazy.
