Philosophy isn't necessary but its a fun hobby. It helps people understand themselves better and gives up a better appreciation of different cultures.

But to answer your question Philosophy will never be as important as Science. Any self absorbed teenager can learn philosophy. Its always been a pseudo-intellectual's affair, it's not hard to understand the metaphysical because any interpretation is technically valid.
