Red Mars starts in 2026 with the first colonial voyage to Mars aboard the Ares, the largest interplanetary spacecraft ever built and home to a crew who are to be the first hundred Martian colonists.
The book details the trip out, construction of the first settlement on Mars, the ever-changing relationships between the colonists, debates among the colonists regarding both the terraforming of the planet and its future relationship to Earth.

I read this book a few weeks ago and was blown away. KSR's knowledge of Mars is soaked into every page, making the events very real. Whereas books like Coyote felt that space travel wasn't interesting enough in itself and had to include lots of action, Red Mars has faith in the reader's interest. It is slow moving, but very rewarding. However, there are some problems with the novel:
>when it comes to politics in sci fi, everyone thinks they're Heinlein. The political bullshit is annoying
>there's the naturalist who gets upset when rovers leave tire tracks in the beautiful Martian dust
>why would they NOT terraform Mars? And wouldn't that have been decided before the ship even left Earth?
>the idea of the space elevator is silly and never fully understood
>later on in the novel, younger people are allowed on the planet, which would never be allowed. It would only be experienced scientists

This is hard science fiction and not for everyone, but if you're at all interested in sci fi you should give it a try.

Hey guys Im just wondering if you can help me out in finding some good sci-fi books to read. They dont need to be strictly dystopian or utopian as long as they're well-written and seem plausible thats all I care about.

Pic related, I heard this was a good trilogy

Is this good sci fi, /lit/? I think so. The trilogy is way underhyped.
