You can cut people's brains open, or dog's, and they have a large computational organ called a brain. This structure, an assemblage of neurons, is the same as yours.
Furthermore it can be disrupted in discrete ways for predictable outcomes. Same as yours.

Your computational mass is able to more easily digest a featureless intelligence - a god or soul, as it is far less data than a person made out of molecules.
Just as a VCR only reads the data strip and is blind to the other structures.
But don't confuse this with reality.

That there is a god, and that god made creatures with brains, but those brains are nonfunctional illusions is not a realistic scenario.
Given that most people in such a world would be an illusion, you are more likely to be the puppet than them.
The only way you assume you aren't is because you 'feel' you aren't. But maybe god just made you feel like you weren't an illusion.
