it has so much personal meaning for me
1. it's a book i read at an impressionable age as a teenager that my close friend also read that we both took as something significant to us and would subsequently make references to throughout our (now long vanished) friendship
2. as a classical musician the themes and anxieties are especially close to me; the made-up modern classical terms are hilariously memetastic; the overwhelming despairing sense of the importance of avant-garde art that's being sincerely put forth at the same time as it's being skewered is deeply accurate; the general incongruous sense that the next performance is the most important thing in the world is troubling and accurate
3. the gentle english sense of regret and thwarted emotions and the rewriting of the past in rose tinted nostalgic hues is painfully and exactly depicted
4. it's a sprawling weird unpopular unabashed experiment and i like those

underrated books you love

this is the greatest novel of the last twenty years, right?
