Oh, I guess I forgot some. Drinkin'. See here:

Curry, Pure Beef
Mallman, Seven Fires
McGee, On Food and Cooking

Falk's book is mostly about homestead scale agriculture. Would also recommend general knowledge about electricity and wood framing (dewalt code books), well drilling, firearms, local wildlife, chicken keeping, etc. Just learn to plant and harvest, how to cook, how to use treat and maintain cast iron, and know how to chop wood. Recommending Fiskars X11 for small log gathering and splitting. Hope you've got a water source my dude.

>I watched The Avengers but I don't feel smarter
>yo I sat through Pacific Rim but my IQ is the same!!!
>Transformers didn't educate me at all

Homer is not supposed to make you smarter. Iliad and Odyssey are mood music for starting with the Greeks. Graves' The Greek Myths will give you more mythical context and some speculation on their meaning. If you really want to keep going, read Herodotus/Thucydides/Xenophon. Or skip to Livy/Plutarch/Tacitus and get with the Romans. If you want to get to the getting-smart material, read Plato and watch the pre-Socratics get BTFO.

What's some nice stuff that got published in the last decade or so? I mean the kind of books that SHOULD be on the best of year lists, but never make it on there because people are too busy putting lesbian historical fiction and Stephen King novels.

Fiction, nonfiction - it doesn't matter.
