Does anyone know of any academic databases that are free or at least affordable, and don't require me to a complex of buildings with a name?

Whole heartily agree. I'm a neuroscience major with a minor in english lit. I've TA'd for some classes and anytime an assignment is an essay or report, I've found the STEM students have a lot harder time compounding their thoughts and ideas into a concise argument.

The marriage of STEM and Humanities is a much needed one because it showcases the two sides of our society. The physical world and the human reaction. To garner a better world view, one must adopt both sides of the coin.

I'm a beginner writer. What genre should I start writing in? I don't really care as I have a wide range of interests. I'm just thinking in terms of what is relatively popular these days and would present the easiest path to getting published. My perception is that science fiction and fantasy are good beginner genres because there is an abundance of online journals that are eager to get contributions. What do you advise /lit/? I was reading a biography of Raymond Chandler today, basically he started out writing detective fiction as it was an extremely popular and accessible genre in the 1930s, he didn't really like it but it developed his writing skills.
