Bakker is sort of a mix between Tolkien and Herbert.
In the sea of shit that is modern fantasy, Bakker stands out as an island of pure KINO. He's unironically the greatest contemporary fantasy author, hands down.
He uses philosophy to spice up the plot, but don't expect more than that, other than some regular character introspects.

You should definitely give it a shot. Aside from Wolfe, not a single author in the genre comes close to his prose with regards to quality.

A lot of the things I hear about Bakker's work interests me, but grimdarkness just kind of takes me out of a story. Especially grimdark that just ends on a nihilistic note about how meaningless everything is and caring about or believing in anything is for idiots. Just makes me feel like I wasted my time bothering to read the story at all.

Unironically The Prince of Nothing series by R Scott Bakker. Sorry, it's grimdark genre fiction, I know I know...but there's monster rape, death, false religions, a literal version of Hell, and much more. I listened to Portal while reading the series, so it sticks for me.
