Literary critics also attacked the Potter series. Harold Bloom, a Yale literature professor, accused the books of “making no demands” on its readers and “dumbing down” the children’s literature tradition of J.R.R. Tolkien and C.S. Lewis. He claimed, “Rowling’s mind is so governed by cliches and dead metaphors that she has no other style of writing.”

The writing was dreadful; the book was terrible. As I read, I noticed that every time a character went for a walk, the author wrote instead that the character stretched his legs'. I began marking on the back of an envelope every time that phrase was repeated. I stopped only after I had marked the envelope several dozen times. I was incredulous. Rowling's mind is so governed by cliches and dead metaphors that she has no other style of writing.

I'd like a refund on the time spent with the Harry Potter books, which I'll admit I was cajoled into reading through observing nearly all my peers partaking in them. So something like $700 bucks or so and J.K. and I would be cool. Actually I'd like to rescind that, it was my own weakness to allow ad populum trends influence my own actions. Maybe just a written note of apology?

Dear Reader-

I whole-heartedly apologize for foisting seven garishly long tomes of childish wish fulfillment and watered down fourth-grade philosophy upon you, the reading public. Thanks for the billion pounds.

All the best.

-J.K.
