Hi, /lit/. I am fairly new to this board and I have a question for everybody interested in answering. For those of you who substantially read into things, where, and more importantly, why did you start? And I don't mean things like "I read (insert book here) because it was cool", I mean where along the line, if there is even a definite piece of that line, did you figure out that you were into literature for more than just surface level entertainment?

You could call me a neophyte, I suppose. I cannot honestly tell you a single book that has merit passed simple entertainment that I have read of my own volition until now. I picked up pic related, as well as some books on existentialist philosophy and things by Nietzsche and Sartre, for the purpose of beginning to prepare myself for the English IV AP test in May. I genuinely enjoy things that provoke thought and I hope that anyone interested hops in and gives their opinions. Give me a huge reading list and all of your personal reasons for reading said things on your lists, everyone.

tl;dr I want to know why and when you started reading things for more than just surface level entertainment.

For those of you bilingual types, what do you think of reading a book in its native language as opposed to a translation? How does it compare? I'm learning French and getting better at reading, but still a long way from really being able to READ a book in the language.

I just finished the book. I loved it, I understood what happened and grasped the ideas as they appeared but I can't get rid of the idea that I didn't get everything, like i'm in the surface only.

I just can think of the indiference towards life, the reponsibility of oneself & one's acts, lack of belief/God... I know it is mainly that but I still feel there is more and I'm missing it.

Emotional.

I feel like I could have made EVA better If I directed it. The first change I'd make would be to make Shinji like the protagonist of this book instead of his typical whiny demeanor

Hey /lit/, I need your help finding L'étranger d'Albert Camus in french. Anybody have this ebook ? Also, do you have L'ètre et le néant de Jean-Paul Sartre ?

I just finished reading this book, and I feel like I completely missed the point. What was the message supposed to be?

So did Camus view Meursault as a model for us to follow, or just caricature of absurdism?

Nausea by Sartre is supposed to be sort of like that. I haven't read it yet so I can't give you any details, but I'm looking forward to it.

The Stranger by Camus is also sort of similar I guess, although it's more apathetic than outright hateful.

Explain this shit.
