Sounds like you'd enjoy the Wind-Up Bird Chronicle.
Definitely wouldn't call it a romance, but relationships do form the premise.

Chapter 2 really got me, so you can probably judge quite early whether you'd like the book.

I also enjoyed that a young character gives a smattering of smatterings throughout, giving her fresh & unfiltered perspective of everything she observes around her.
