How to be forgiven for sins:

You have to be remorseful AND ask God for forgiveness (check), promise to God you'll never do this again, and get rid of any kind of profit/benefit from this sin.

So if I were a thief I'd have to do steps one and two, then give back all the money, then even go as far as to lose all the fat off my body because I gained this weight with stolen money.

Run that by a priest (a decent one not one of those compromised western ones) because that's how we do it in Shia Islam, it may be different for you. I thought I should share since we're both Abrahamic.

But please keep in mind, despairing in God's mercy is one of the worst sins you could commit. Never doubt that he will forgive you.
