What do we think about the state of publishing today?
I saw some article whining about the industry declining or profit margins falling or something like that. Whining about Amazon. And it occurred to me that I don't care at all, because publishing is bad. It's a terrible industry.
You get your work published via 1) family connections 2) networking - meaning unpaid internships, absurdly expensive MFA programs, scammy seminars, or some other form of bullshit that connects you with the gatekeepers and 3) virtue signaling. Either they want an author they personally know, or they want a queer disabled latinx author writing generic genre fiction with a woke twist. Maybe she's good, maybe she's not, but that doesn't even factor in. At no point is merit a factor. I know people from college who went on to work in publishing, and they're absolutely dead inside.
I don't care if these companies lose money. I don't care if Jeff Bezos burns down their headquarters and replaces the authors with wagies in cagies. They keep trying to trick me into reading bad books. I've become a Harold Bloom level autistic recluse, only reading the canon, because I have zero trust in new releases now.

how do we feel about F. Scott Fitzgerald?
i personally think hes underrated in academia. part of the general attitude of gatekeeping. once plebs read him in mass, he was dismissed.
The Great Gatsby and Tender is the Night are exquisite; some of the most beautiful books ever written
