high-school, possibly even middle school, level book recommendations?

I am... dumb, apparently. I have let my brain atrophy and poisoned it with every substance known to man every single day for upwards of a fucking decade at this point. I am now clean and sober. I decided to try and read a book. I cannot. I cannot comprehend shit. I tried As I Lay Dying. I tried The Road. I tried If On a Winter's Night a Traveller.

Nothing. Can't comprehend shit.

I want to start reading again. I'm GOING to start reading again. Even if I'm never smart. Even if I never read anything of substance. It's just a positive hobby to have.

What can you guys give me that even a BUFFOON can read? Something STRAIGHTFORWARD. Something with SIMPLE prose. My vocabulary is still fine, I just had a real hard time making sense of all the words together.

It's strange as I don't have this problem with non-fiction. I mean, I know the New York Times doesn't require a high reading level, but I read that shit just fine. I think it has to do with the legnth and complexity of the prose... the way the words are put together.

Shit I can't fucking type a coherent sentence either.

Anyway... halp?
