these, the second man invites suspicion because he volunteered the possibility of an impostor despite the more likely option being that they're both named Doug Johnson.

In fact, it's so much more likely, you might surmise his name actually IS Doug. He has paranoid schizophrenia and thinks people are trying to kidnap him.

That said, the unnamed detective is taking this matter seriously. That means they're not only claiming to have the same name, they're physically similar enough to make the second Doug's accusation seem reasonable. Two men of the same name who look identical would be a rarer combination.


In conclusion...
The first man introduced himself to you directly, perhaps to make a contact as Doug Johnson. An impostor couldn't hope to impersonate a man who's standing right there, so such a man could gain nothing from appearing second. The second man is the real Doug Johnson, who has evaded his enemies and arrived in time to see you.
