Why is it that we consider originality good and clichés bad? I'm not trying to argue the opposite, but I'm not sure how I would articulate what exactly is the virtue of originality. For example, an AI (or even an unoriginal writer) could scan the entire canon of literary masterpieces and create a composite work that would be technically masterful. But it would be totally lacking in originality. If you were to criticize it for this reason, how would you say that the lack of originality detracts from the work itself?
