you've nailed the problem. i actually tried a prototype of even this first round a while back on reddit--the thread didn't even make it, got rejected/not approved by a moderator who took it as too promotional. i thought this was a possible/fair assessment but also thought it sorta missed the point/missed an opportunity.
as a result. i turned to /lit exclusively, in part because i'm used to this board, in part because it really does offer, despite all its setbacks and problems, a group of people who are 1. genuinely good, and 2. genuinely committed to exploring some interesting ideas. outside of my relations IRL/my experience in the academy, there still just isnt much of an alternative to /lit. i hope to address this deficit in part through the (slow) development of my discord and eventually a forum/arena of discourse more associated with the greater pykewater project--ideally, something like a discussion board/art collective/seminar platform with greater moderation.

as far as judging is concerned, i'd love to talk to you more. please shoot me a separate email (pykewater@gmail) indicating your interest and we'll move from there. would love to develop new and interesting competitions as time goes on; very open to suggestions, collaborations, etc.

since i've been reading the submissions on a running basis, and since i don't anticipate a deluge of submissions at this final hour, the ETA will be a couple of days from now, if even that. at this point, i have a good sense of the essays that are real contenders and are going to be re-read and will accomplish that over tomorrow's morning espresso.

that's a good volume
i know taschen makes a basic art series but i've never really been into that. didn't think they had a hiroshige-level print for hokusai.
phaidon also has a great volume on hokusai, and "hokusai's landscapes" is another high-quality printing, i think.
