Since a couple of movies about the Manson Family are coming to theaters in the next couple of months it may be prudent to revisit Bruno's tirade about the crimes of the Family being the culmination of the hippy dream. People tend to focus on Manson and regard the women as brainwashed. It is disturbing to consider intelligent women capable of heinous crimes without some sort of impetus propelling them, difficult to believe that Charles Manson was simply a vehicle with which these women could pursue their deepest desires. Society encourages women to be strong, yet when these women actually exercised their strength, their will, toward their own ends society quickly made apologies for them, provided them with scapegoats, treated them as naive children who'd waded out of their depth, corrupted by influence. Despite their privileged backgrounds, or maybe because of it, these people had ruthless natures and that terrifies the weak. These people said, 'We fuck, we have babies, we get stoned, we steal, we kill, we live off the land, we embrace life and death with open arms, and you either understand and respect us or you are envious of our freedom and fear us.'

Can someone help me with what I believe to be an egregious error in this novel? I feel like I'm overlooking something.

In chapters 1, 2, and 3, it is explained that Bruno, the older brother, "was almost sixty years old" (15), and Michel, the younger brother, "had just turned forty" (16), in July of 1998 (9). Yet in chapter 4, "Bruno was born in March 1956" (22). If that were the case, he would be 42 in 1998. How is this possible?
