>I think the school systems have a large part to do with this. You sit in your classes and are told what to do, then you're evaluated on how well you did what you were told. You merely pass through the system with zero impact on its structure, and so many people come out the other side with an unconscious belief that nothing they DO matters, so when these people congregate (socially and intellectually, not necessarily physically) they come to believe that what counts is what's on the INSIDE. And since there's nothing much there, what counts is finding a label they feel comfortable with.
YES. 100%. It's a kind of a reaction to very dim circumstances.
