Same. Worst part is that when it went down some days ago I was legitimately sad and thinking about what the fuck would I do with my life afterwards, where I'd go. Somehow this site always looks like a shadow of its former self.

Finishing up my last 2 deployment downloads. First Casualty by Toby Harnden is up right now, though I've slacked off too much. Mini Philosophy by Johnny Thompson is a lunchtime quickie as it's broken down into shorts.

Does anyone have any good recommendations for the Soviet-Afg war? Afgantsy by Rodric Braithwaite was fantastic, covering both the political and military aspect of the conflict, but I'd like to get some new material.

Those Gaylo books were horrible. Both writing and the themes of the books.
Here are a few recommendations:

Frontlines series by Marko Kloos
The one thing that makes this awfully generic series stand out is the quality of writing. Here you have all the usual tropes - future Cold War (along the pretty much same lines), Air Combat Controller in SPACEEEEE, general dystopia, inexplicably hostile aliens, the works.
But it is a well written and fun read.

The Subterrene War series by T.C. McCarthy
Really bleak, hard and near future mil sci-fi, written by a former intelligence analyst. Hard characters, hard science (focused on military affairs) and avoidance of usual tropes.
The first book reads like Dispatches by Michael Herr in a future conflict.

Future Weapons of War a collection of short stories edited by Joe Haldeman
Dozen or so authors with their take on future military conflicts. You'll probably find something you like there.
