I remember when that was big, it was awful. I'm quite fond of Samus and it broke my heart to see her turned into a billboard for an ideology.
I'm a strong believer in the death of the author, but there's a difference between having your own perspective on a character and pushing that perspective on other people like you're proselytizing a religion.
The thing I hate about it most is the glee they take in it. They imagine themselves taking a character you love away from you and derive so much pleasure from it.
Of course, that's impossible. No matter how much they shout in my ear they can't budge my interpretation unless I choose to allow them too. But in their minds they believe they are doing me a great injury, and love love love it. It's quite repulsive.
This pattern has repeated itself many times now, but I don't think it's a matter of great concern. Pushing a character as a political mascot is inherently fleeting. I will still care about Samus seventy years from now... will these people?
We need only wait. The circus always leaves town.
