> Without God, we need no morality, no truth, and no justice. And only then, can we aspire to true freedom.

"A nihilist is a man who judges of the world as it is that it ought not to be, and of the world as it ought to be that it does not exist. According to this view, our existence (action, suffering, willing, feeling) has no meaning: the pathos of 'in vain' is the nihilists' pathos — at the same time, as pathos, an inconsistency on the part of the nihilists."

To feel remorse, guilt and shame over what you have done, to turn on your act once it has been done, to look back on yourself with bitterness and loathing, is this what it means to be "responsible", to be "mature"? To be able to hurt yourself appropriately when you've done wrong? Wouldn't it be more responsible to defend your actions, rather than to sell yourself out at the first sign that somebody else would call your actions immature, or even immoral? Isn't that just weakness and paranoia, wanting to give yourself up to the views of others and even loathe yourself as others would loathe you because you're afraid to disagree with them?

A young boy does wrong, and he's persuaded by his parents to feel remorse for what he has done, and so he does for he wants to be the mature, responsible person his parents expect him to be, the mature person who feels remorse. He comes clean, he confesses his wrongs, he abstains from lying. He grows older and sure enough he becomes mature and responsible, no longer does he needs a parent to remind him he should feel remorse. In fact, he eventually becomes so mature and so adult that he no longer needs to confess or feel remorse to think himself as a mature or adult person, for so long as he thought himself as such a person, and so he keeps harmless secrets, tells little white lies when it's to his benefit, and is not so quick to feel remorse, he no longer needs to behave responsible or adult to be responsible or adult.

"One becomes moral---not because one is moral. Submission to morality can be slavish or vain or selfish or resigned or obtusely enthusiastic or thoughtless or an act of desperation, like submission to a prince: in itself it is nothing moral."

". . . all the means by which one has so far attempted to make mankind moral were through and through immoral."

Can anyone help explain this quote to me?

"Whereas the man of action binds his life to reason and its concepts so that he will not be swept away and lost, the scientific investigator builds his hut right next to the tower of science so that he will be able to work on it and to find shelter for himself beneath those bulwarks which presently exist." Nietzsche
