>"Everything one had been wishing for for years has happened, the whole country littered up, millions of Hansjürgens and Utes dead."
Adorno in a letter to his parents, May '45.

Get into Dialectics. Maybe even read Einführung in die Dialektik if you're german.

And if you're an englishman, then you're lucky. The translations are most of the times easier to understand because german is an ebin meme language.
And don't expect too much. His work is great and he had chosen the way he expressed himself really wisely. He endorsed Hegel's language so he must've obviously tried to emulate it somehow. But he used a really sublime language sprinkled with some 1950s everyday words. It's the reason critics call Adorno and Horkheimer elitist.
You won't get stuff after a few pages. Hell you'll maybe be 100, 200 pages into one of his books and you won't understand shit. A&H weren't really known for using examples to explain concepts so there's that. Don't give up though.

So basically

>get into dialectics. Secondary literature is fine. I'd recommend Einführung in die Dialektik by Adorno

>Read Dialectics of Enlightenment (maybe leave out his Ulysses interpretation, Culture Industry and their take on antisemitism are interesting)

>read his essays

>read Negative Dialectic

1. I'd agree that it's an ideology, just a bretty gud one
2. Command economy run by an algorithm that has the needs of the people as its input and an as-precise-as-possible production command as its output. The machines necessary for this belong to the people and are as such controlled via council democracy.
Communism is Soviet power plus the computerization of the entire country.

3. >free speech is a tool of the moneyed classes
I guess technically they might be right, given the ruling class allows free speech...But seriously, what the hell.

>What tools does it have to prevent the Stalins, Kims, etc, from seizing power and becoming de-facto monarchs
I think Gramsci is helpful here. I haven't yet read him, but apparently he saw cultural hegemony (a proletarian one in this case) as a necessary condition for successful revolution, not just a small vanguard party taking over the state.
Also, critical theory.
I think a hefty dose of (queer) feminism is also very useful. Not only allows it to potentially draw 50% of the world population to your cause, women also tend to be less violent and way more communicative, qualities diametrically opposed to those of the Stalins and Kims, I would think.

I know an Antigerman who reads bahamas. The guy thinks Bush will go down in history as the best president the US ever had, accuses Obama of being too soft, the invasions of Iraq and Afghanistan were acts motivated merely by the desire to liberate the respective countries' people, thinks the best thing Israel can do in regard to Gaza and Iran is to invade or at least bomb the shit out of them and of course Netanyahu is a good person. I don't think it's a coincidence that he reads bahamas.
