I've never read any Lovecraft. Where should I start? What are essential stories?

Who is your favorite author?

Pic related, mine: H.P. Lovecraft

He is the only author who's fiction has made me feel the sensation of fear. Not every story is like that, but several of his works have found some kind of niche that makes my blood run cold.

Lovecraft, though /lit/ seems to hate him for some reason.

So, I just finished reading The Dream-Quest of Unknown Kadath.

Question, what the hell did I just read?

How does /lit/ feel about Lovecraft?
I mean objectively, as a writer, ignoring the droves of mindless LULZCTHULHU bullshit.

hey /lit/
I rarely read fantasy or sci-fi, but I want to read something of either of those genres for light reading. The problem is, most of the stuff in those genres are too corny or pulpy for my taste. What are some recs for someone with a low tolerance for that?

pic somewhat related, he is one fantasy author that I have really enjoyed in the past.

Alright /lit/, that's it. I've had it. I am so fucking sick of these smug HP Lovecraft fans. I have this pretentious douchebag cousin who lives in the Bay area. Goes to Berkerly, thinks he's hot shit.

So, we're driving with his dad, my uncle, and I get into a conversation with my uncle about American Literature, right? So we're talking about Fitzgerald and Hemingway, and how Bukowski was a total wannabe prick, and then suddenly my cousin buts in 'HEY ____ HAVE YOU READ MY FAVORITE AUTHOR? HIS NAMES HP LOVECRAFT. HE'S THE BEST AUTHOR EVER.'

So I called him on it. 'Oh yeah? What's your favorite work of his? What did you like about it?'

to which he admitted he hasn't actually read any of his works, but his friend told him Lovecraft is cool, and his friend has good taste, and there's a lot of cool picture of that squid thing on the internet. So it must be good.

There is nothing worse than Lovecraft fans.

General literage thread?

The perfect book for you would be The City and The City. It is about two cities that occupy the same physical space and what happens when people accidentally cross the boundaries. It is very postmodern and very well written. It sounds like a sci-fic book, but it actually is not.

I'm reading H.P. Lovecraft.
Great but not as good as I thought it would be.
I like the etymology of his works better.

I would exchange them.

White culture and economies are failing. Asians and Indians are rising rapidly.

Hey /lit/, first of all, I want to say that you and /sci/ are far more entertaining than I thought. I'm a /b/tard you see, but I have never paid any heed to the other boards. I'm happy I came out of my shell. The intelligent conversation you and /sci/ provide is a breath of fresh air from the insanity of /b/. ANYWAYS, I just picked up Lovecraft's "At the Mountains of Madness" and I am enjoying it so far. What are Lovecraft's other "essential" works? I want to start reading him.

Hey /lit/, I don't know what your opinions are on this reading material, but if you would be so kind to answer a question-

Is there any real order you suggest that one reads Lovecraft in? Should I just grab The Outsider and Others and read in order? What do you think?

Thanks
