What's the space opera equivalent of Game of Thrones?

I probably am not alone in this, but this is a strange series I can only love/hate. Some of it is really cool and awesome fantasy stuff, some of it is detailed descriptions of desert nomads raping preteens in the public. The dragons are cool, the struggle for power and all the politics are even cool, but then there are chapters and chapters of people I could not really at all symphatize (Feast was a real pain to read).

Every book left a sort of a strange aftertaste, but at the same time I really wanted to know what happened next so I picked up the next one. Never been more confused by something with such a simple premise.

I am exactly in the middle of that and I just wish I could just shoot them all in the face and see what happens to Arya (or Cat, whatever). George is a fucking douchenozzle.

Reading A Song of Ice and Fire, I notice Martin uses the word "niggardly" a lot. Do you think that's a political statement?
