In fantasy genre, what is more important, the quality of plot or the richness/originality of the setting?

Taking two modern best selling fantasy authors, Rowling and Martin, I personally find very little originality in their created settings, but neither is the plot all that original.

So what is their prime selling point? Their ace card?
