Dark and creepy is being taken out of your comfort zone and put into situations with the unknown. It doesn't matter if it's man vs man, man vs himself, man vs nature, man vs society, man vs Obama, etc. it all carries the same elemental essence of having to accept something you don't want to accept.

Take Berzerk for example. It's remembered as one of the darkest animes simply because the ending took everyone by surprise out of their comfort zones and butt fucked all those emotions that people had invested in those characters. Of course the audience still loves it because the average person (male/female/whatever) is a dirty self degrading bitch that secretly gets off to it vigorously like cracked out knob-goblins. Now that's something dark you can bring out to people's attention. Mankind's want to better himself but occasionally shove something up its ass and destroy itself a little.
