Was the Trystero real, an elaborate hoax set up by a scorned lover for revenge, or the invention of a mentally ill woman who broke under the stress of depression and work that was too much to bear? And what was the central theme of the novel? To me it was a criticism of many different facets of American culture and society.

The fact that he intentionally tried to write a shitty enough novel to be dropped by his publisher and still produced something rich with meaning, inspiring scholarship even to this day, is probably the best testament we have as to why Pynchon is the greatest American author perhaps of all time, rivaled only by Melville and Uncle Walt maybe.
