I like him quite a lot. I don't see why /lit/ has never really read him.

Sabbath's Theater = decent
Portnoy's Complaint = decent
American Pastoral = really good
The Human Stain = very bad
The Plot Against America = really good

Sexual? Violent? Offensive to certain demographics? Lots of swearing?

Is it worth reading?

Great Tier

Oblivion: Hair
Girl With Curious Hair

Good Tier

The Pale King

Decent Tier

Infinite Jest
The Broom of the System

Bad Tier

Brief Interviews with Hideous Men

That's how I view it. Very few people will agree, or even will have read most of the books. People will say Infinite Jest is God or Great Tier, and not know the others. I dunno. I feel sorry for people who don't read all of Wallace's fiction works, and who don't read them multiple times. I've read GWCH 5 times.

No way Jose, this stays under wrap for months (until I go back and reread it, after a period or waiting). I am pleased with it, though.

And yeah, I'd do very nasty things to the girl in the pic. I can't believe some people don't think she's hot, especially in that dress.

Well, first of all, it's not me 'mischaracterising' the board, it's the OP. Secondly, I don't think either of us have. It's well-known how much this board loves fantasy. Also, they do criticise high-brow works, although not genuinely, mostly to look smart and curry favour (with strangers on an internet message board, lol).

1. This is the most common. It's such disgusting, horrible, useless 'literature' that I won't ever finish it, and so it gets put where I won't have to look at it, and get...upset.

2. Fat books. Stuff over 800 pages perhaps, because although I own some good shit that's long, it's just too much for the bookcase.

3. Hardcovers. Some good and some bad, but too damn heavy and tall for my shelves. A shame, cuz some rock. My copies of Under The Dome and The Pale King are 'trapped' in The Attic.

Everything else gets to go on my 3 shelves, the main one and the 2 support shelves.

So /lit/, how do you divide up your stuff?
Another thing. What do you think about the ethics of this situation? I want to get a birth present for someone I know, but am VERY strapped for cash. I'm thinking of getting a specific book of my bookcase and wrapping it up, ostensibly as new.

Cons: Bad form; they don't read much anymore

Pros: Barely touched the book so it's almost new; you can't TELL I've read a few pages; the person used to like the author, but I dunno if they still do.

What do you think?

All Wordsworth Classics, all £1.99, and all probably very bad. You know the kinda stuff they have in the range, mostly stuffy 19th century 'classics'.

The thing is, I'm dirt poor, so I'm actually thinking (sigh) about it. Opinions on this? I was gonna photograph the display and post it here, so you could see specifics, but it was some tiny bookstore, and the staff were watching me like sunhawks. What do you think?

It's a Dutch review (in English) of 1Q84. First he spends about 10 minutes waffling on about the author's other books, then he flips through the pages of 1Q84 with random comments you can only just understand. I can't tell if this review is terrible or just weird.

Probably The Stand (Stephen King) for me, I reckon ig had about 15 primary characters, and dozens of secondary characters. A close second is probably War and Peace.

And Another Thing - Eoin Coifer
Under The Dome - Stephen King
The Pale King - David Foster Wallace

I want to get 11/22/63 and 1Q84 on release day as well. I wish I owned early 1st editions, rather than stuff from the last few years. Owning 1st editions feel 'boss'. I wreck them pretty quickly though, like all my books: dog's ears, badly damaged spines, and crossed off short story titles on the contents page.

I hope so!

Seriously, I got and enjoyed her latest book, The Year of the Flood, now I want moar. I've read all but one of her novels, and a few of her short story collections as well. All of her work is good, some is great.

Yeah, a Sunhawk thread about Margaret Atwood. What a surprise! She's a great writer, though.

Kazuo Ishiguro (7)
Flannery o'Connor (4)
JD Salinger (4)

I've read all but 1 book for Haruki Murakami, at least for his translated works. I've read all of Asimov's sci-fi works, apart from Nemesis. Read a lot of W Somerset Maugham.

I wish I'd read more complete works of authors...although I don't know why this matters. Maybe it doesn't.

Thomas Pynchon
Virginia Woolf

Never understood the love for either of them. If someone can explain (possibly with sock puppets that have buttons for eyes), I'd be grateful,

I've written a few novels, some were crap, some were (maybe) good. If we're talking life experience, tell me if I have enough:

27 years old...

- Had half a dozen jobs
- Been to school and college
- Had friends
- Been abroad a few times

I'm not sure if I do or not. To be honest, having jobs is a great way to meet people from different backgrounds and of different ages.
