Can anyone recommend a decent fantasy book that is not naive - at least in the way the world, society, politics work. Grim setting is appreciated. I'd enjoy a well developed universe.

Bonus points (but those are not necessary) if:
- it's a space sci-fi with spaceships and shit
- has a protagonist that is not retarded or at least stops being retarded
- has an interesting political intrigue
