People forget that references are for easier communication. Instead of explaining some concept yourself, you rely on someone else who has already touched on it, but most crucially, that your audience is already well-aware of.
Joyce, being the massive faggot that he is, seems to have confused references with puzzles to be figured out. It's basically like a child coming to you with a closed box and asking you what's inside and thinking that's a puzzle.

The irish have been running perhaps the single finest propaganda campaign I've ever encountered. All of their authors are lauded as elusive literary genuises who write deep, multilayered books. But every time I actually try to read a book written by an paddie I am severely disappointed.
James Joyce? I've read both the portrait and Ulysses. Highly underdeveloped and trite books. Pic related (actual quote) describes his literature probably the best. Mediocre style, no substance, depends solely on the artifice of obscurantism.
Oscar Wilde? Same story. Portrait of Dorian Gray rips off all its interesting parts from Maturin and stuffing the rest with utterly boring filler. Highly overrated author.
Don't even get me started on Jonathan Swift. The irish propaganda is so strong that he's often lauded as the first political satirist. You can see that there's no substance there because whenever people talk about his work they only mention the most superficial aspects of his satire and never anything more substantive. Trite garbage.
Beckett, Shaw, Yeats: same story.
It got to the point that I make it a point to see whether a book I'm interested in was written by an i*ish person. If it was, I simply move on.
