As the only child of a single mother with no parents or siblings, this book taught me the meaning of the word family.
If I'm wrong, pls don't shatter my illusion.

It seemed to me like an elongated anecdote. I don't like the use of the word "overrated", but yeah. I liked the beginning, the chapter where the colonel tries to an hero and the final chapter. The rest is meh.

How was this book lit?

What am I in for lads?
Will it live up to the hype?

What are /lit/'s thoughts on this novel?

I'm asking because it's actually one of the rare books I've had to stop reading. I found the story boring and a chore to read through. I guess I'm not a big fan of magical realism.

Do I need to know more about the historical context of the novel and author to appreciate it?
