I think you misread the topic of the thread, you're supposed to list books you haven't read yet.

Tangentially related, but does anyone have recommendations on where to read academic papers aside from JSTOR or Academia.edu?

Been out of academia for a few years now but want to stay up-to-date on certain fields.

Has there ever been a book with a good ending?

I don't think I've ever read one.

At least Murakami is a fuckton better than Ozai/Oe/Mishima.

Are there any good Japanese books that are uplifting or joyous?

Oe, Murakami, and most of the major ones I've read or heard of seem incredibly depressing.

Quick Recommendation Thread:

I really enjoyed Oe's A Personal Matter, especially the style (although the subject matter was entertaining as well). Are there any other Japanese books with a similar style, but more upbeat? I've heard most of Oe's novels deal with depression.

Hello e/lit/ists, I'm currently reading 'A Personal Matter' by Kenzaburo Oe and I wanted to discuss it.

I'm a big fan of Japanese lit. 'Kokoro' is one of my favorite books ever and I love classic authors such as Soseki, Dazai and Mishima. I decided to try this one since reading it was mentioned as the favorite book of some anons.

I'm 2 chapters from finishing it, and so far not only has it proven quite disappointing, but I've felt disgusted by this MC with whom I can't relate in any sense. He's 27 and he feels old, a failure. I'm also 27 but I learned to get a grip a long time ago.
He doesn't have any worth-reading experiences, and his way of thinking is quite moronic. Would you say a 27 year old woman is ugly because she's OLD? He speaks as if the only beauty is in youth, as if old-age and death are right around the corner. They're not even 30! What the hell?
